Hardliners deny these Mary-like persecutions claiming that only a fraction of 10,000 were ministers and scholars in England at the time. The Protestant reformers rejected this doctrine (Reid et al. 1990: 1184). Till the field-preaching was entirely and utterly swept away, the persecutor felt that he had accomplished nothing.
