At most every juncture in the text, I emphasize nuts and bolts considerations over theory. There may be more the parent/teacher needs to say, or there may be some other way they need to say it so that the student can see it. "Seeing" someone else's explanation about something, particularly in math, is not always easy; and it does not mean a student cannot learn or come to understand a principle or relationship, or that a student is not smart, just because s/he doesn't see it the same way the teacher sees it, or the way the teacher says it the first time they give what they THINK is an adequate explanation.

The district ended up choosing Math Expressions (Please share your experience if you use this!) and this decision allowed me to stop teaching Everyday Mathematics "with fidelity" and monkey around with starting Guided Math/Math Rotations/Small Group Math/Math Centers/etc. for the remainder of this year. There are brain-appropriate strategies for helping children improve in these areas as well, especially children with ADHD. Resist the urge to repeat or paraphrase each student's response.
